St. Ann School shares in the mission of the Catholic Church and our Christian families and will provide a religious and academic education to prepare students to be responsible members of families, church, and community.

Motto for Life

I will do the right thing today even if I don't feel like it.
I will treat people right today even if I don't feel like it.
Today I will remember my will power is stronger than how I feel or what I think.
Everyone counts and every day matters at St. Ann Catholic School.
All things are possible today!

Principal Notes:

It seems once school has begun, the time starts slipping away at a much faster rate. The ending for the first nine weeks is October 14.

There are many wonderful activities and lessons going on each day in the classrooms. I have begun helping out in teacher's classrooms. It is a great time for me to help assess children individually as well as working on various activities with them.

Parents don't forget to call in before 9 a.m. if your child is going to be absent. After this time we will be calling you.

Cafeteria Reminder

PARENTS PLEASE PAY YOUR OVERDUE CHARGES

The cafeteria is having a major problem with parents not paying their child's charges. The charges are not being taken of and consequently the money is not coming into the cafeteria fund. Our cafeteria can not maintain itself when parents are not paying their accounts. When a child's account is overdrawn, a note is sent home on Friday to parents letting them know what is owed. From this point on, if a family owes over $10; and a notice has been sent home; and the parent chooses not to take care of the account, then the family's name and account will be turned over to their parish priest. Children who owe over $10 will not be allowed to buy any "extra" items.

EXTRA ITEMS BEING OFFERED DURING LUNCH

A child's regular lunch consists of a meat, two vegetables, fruit and drink (milk or juice in a carton). There are also extra items being offered such as extra fruit choices, bottled water and canned fruit drinks. Anything which is an "extra" has an extra charge for it. Extra fruit choices are 50 cents each, bottled water, canned fruit drinks are $1.00 a piece and when they come back for "seconds", they are being charged. You need to be asking your child if they are taking "extras". If they are, they are being charged for them. The children are being told when they get these extras that they are being charged extra. If you do not want your child getting any extra items as they go through the line then send a note letting the cafeteria know. Also, our federal lunch program regulates portion size and salt intake. It's not the cafeteria workers deciding how much to give a child, it's the government's decision. If you are having concerns about our lunch program or your account, please call Ruth Ann Collins.

Parents who volunteer at the cafeteria should enter the cafeteria through the front doors of the parish hall. Once your cafeteria duty is complete, do not enter the school through the playground door. If you need to come into the school, you must enter through the front door of the school and sign in at the school office. Thank you so much!!!!!!

Basketball Skills Clinic

Jerry Houston will again be offering a basketball skills clinic. This clinic will be held every other Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the St. Ann's gym. The clinic began on September 26 but he is still allowing newcomers. There is no fee for the program. There will be a beginners, intermediate and advanced skill level. If you have any questions, please call Jerry at 952-3260.

Youth Choir

Youth choir practice has begun. Practice takes place each Wednesday afternoon from 2:10 to 2:40. It is a wonderful sight to see and hear when these students are singing during our Friday's school mass and on other special occasions. The choir would like to wear special choir shirts this year during the masses and their programs. We have around 20 students needing shirts. The total cost for these shirts is $250. If you would like to donate to this cause or purchase all of them, please contact Gail Ciecorka at gail.ciecorka@st-ann.com.

Library News & Book Fair

Our school library is still accepting donations for Accelerated Reader prizes. We especially need prizes for the Middle School students. Many thanks to those who have donated prizes thus far. Remember to check the Fast Direct library bulletin board for ways to earn bonus "bucks".

After school tutoring must be teacher or principal recommended; therefore if you have a concern regarding the process, please contact your child's teacher or Mrs. Ciecorka.

EASY DOES IT-WEARING and LOADING BACKPACKS

Overloaded and improperly worn backpacks can cause back, shoulder and neck problems along with numbness and tingling in the arms. These tips for backpack safety can protect against possible problems.
  • Choose a lightweight backpack that has two well-padded shoulder straps and a padded back to avoid being poked by sharp objects.
  • Children should never carry more than 15% of their body weight including the backpack and its contents. That means a loaded backpack for a 100-pound child should weigh no more than 15 pounds.
  • Load the heaviest items close to the child's back and explore options for lightweight school supplies.
  • Bend at the knees and hold the backpack with both hands when lifting it onto the shoulders. The bottom of the pack should rest in the curve of the lower back and not drop more than four inches below the waistline.
  • Wear straps over both shoulders rather than hanging the backpack off of one.
  • Organize children's homework and what they need to take to school so that only essential items need to be carried.

Re: 2009 Junior Kentucky YMCA Youth Assembly (KYA)

What: The Kentucky YMCA Youth Association Youth Assembly is quickly approaching. This assembly is a practical experience in the mechanics of running state government. Students will be provided with the opportunity to serve as Senator or Representative, debate important issues in the actual chambers at the Capitol, author a bill, run for office, become a lobbyist, work with the Media Corps, and learn while having fun meeting teens from every corner of the Commonwealth.

Location/Date: The 2009 Junior KYA will be held December 13-15. The conference will take place at the Crowned Plaza Holiday Inn (formerly the Executive West Hotel) in Louisville, KY. On December 14, the Assembly will travel via charter bus to Frankfort to debate in the Capitol and Old Capitol. Cost: Delegate fee is $200 per student plus bus fare (approximate cost $30). The fee includes lodging, two meals and transportation to Louisville and Frankfort.

To Prepare for the Youth Assembly: Mandatory workshops will be held after school. Students will brainstorm, research, and write bills. Students will learn parliamentary procedure, debate, write pro/con speeches and newspaper articles, and create visual displays. Workshops are very important meetings for students to be an active participant at KYA. Requirements: Students must be an active Y Club member, acquire 4 points by attending meetings and participating in service projects, maintain a C in all subjects and conduct to attend. Students must also attend mandatory workshops.

Financial Aid: Financial assistance is available. Complete the financial assistance request form and return it to a KYA sponsor Thursday, October 1. Forms are included in the packet.

Website: For more information go to www.kyymca.org. Feel free to call us at school if you have additional questions.

Student Preparation: All middle school students watched a video presentation introducing KYA events, participated in a workshop with Drew Caldwell, YMCA Regional director, and worked with a partner to brainstorm bill ideas, research topics, and write a bill.

Last But Not Least………

The front door will be locked after school. The children have an agenda book with all homework assignments listed. It is their responsibility to make sure they have everything they need before going home. They have plenty of time while waiting for their bus or car in the afternoon to get things ready. Some teachers also go over with the students what they should be taking home before the first bell rings. If your child is absent and you want to pick up homework, please call the office to let us know you will be doing this and we will gladly let you into the school.
