Middle School News

Zip lining, passing through a spider web, and crossing a lava pit! What a great day!

Dear Parent(s),

Welcome to a new school year! We would like to invite you to join a saintly team this year. Our team will consist of teachers, students, parents, priests, and our community. We would like to invite you to join our team so we can have a successful year.

While we focus on academics and a faith community, we will also build compassionate individuals. This is our mission in middle school:

Within a Christian community, the team at St. Ann School seek to foster personal and academic excellence, treat one another with dignity, respect our environment, embrace diversity, and develop character which merits trust and honor. We encourage positive risk taking and perseverance in pursuit of our goals.

Together we can be a team and solve problems positively. Together we can dream and make our dreams come true. Together we can move mountains this year and reach for the stars in the academic realm. Together we can build friendships and Christian relationships. Together we can pray, laugh, cry, make mistakes and learn from our mistakes, and support one another. Together we can be a team and score with God.

Sincerely,

Mr. Long

House System
A Saintly Experience

Saints will come alive this year at St. Ann School. One of the ways we will achieve our mission is to implement a House System. The House System consists of four houses, each representing a saint: St. Joseph, St. Padre Pio, St. Anthony, and St. Thomas Aquinas. Each House will have a motto, team color, and mascot. Every student will receive a team shirt and the Gasper River Retreat day will be just the beginning of our teaming experiences this year in middle school. Students will be required to wear their team shirt every Thursday. Throughout the year, students will be involved in team building activities. These activities will vary, but the goal is for all students to have a positive interaction with one another, to learn to work together and to trust one another, as well as gaining a sense of pride and self-worth when everyone realizes that they can make a difference. Along with team building activities, students will also be involved in service projects throughout the year to build a spirit of faith and truly make saints come alive in our school, our community, and our world.

Houses will represent the core value behind the school's decision to group students together to achieve goals and cheer each other on along the way. Mixing students from all grades in the House provides greater opportunities for students to meet peers with whom they may not otherwise interact and will provide a smoother transition for sixth graders. Positive student interaction through teams will get students involved in activities in order to support their House and students gain a sense of pride in being able to contribute. When all students feel they can make a difference, it creates a positive climate for both students and teachers, making the House System a win-win situation! As Henry Ford once said, "Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; and working together is success." Building a positive atmosphere for both students and teachers invites all students to journey with God.

Saintly Helpers

Agenda Books

We feel that organization is one of the major keys to student achievement. Homework and tests will be listed on the board each day for students to copy in their agenda books, and they will go home each day. The agenda book given to students is a useful tool for keeping organized. Please check your child's agenda book nightly for additional information.

Late Work

Responsibility builds character and we want to help our students build character in middle school; therefore, no late work will be accepted. Please contact the teacher if an emergency occurs. We are an empathetic group of teachers who understand emergency situations.

Absent Work

A homework sheet and books will be placed on the table outside the office on days students are absent. If homework is not picked up the day of the absence, students may pick it up the first day he or she returns to school. Refer to the St. Ann School Student/Parent Family Handbook for absent work due dates. Refer to the homework chart; it is a great tool for success.

Make-Up Tests:

Make-up tests are to be taken the day upon returning to school unless special arrangements have been made with the teacher. Make-up tests may be given during the school day or after school.

Power Break:

Students will take a ten minute break each morning to eat a healthy snack. Snacks may include fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, breakfast bars, and water. Vegetable and fruit dip and water flavorings are not permitted.

Grades:

Grades will be posted each week on Fast Direct. Midterm progress reports will be available on Fast Direct midway through each nine week period.

Cheroreader:

Be a Cherokee this year and acquire your Cherokee Reader points each nine weeks. Fifteen points are required and will count as a test grade in literature. Students may read one grade level below their grade. Novels read together as a class are excluded. Don't forget to take your novel to class each day and pump up that Cherokee Spirit. Be a Cheroreader and your brain knowledge will be a powerful tool in life. Mrs. Charlotte has read millions of books; let her suggest one based on your interest.
