We have begun a unit on Japan, and a major project has been assigned and is due on April 7th. I have enclosed the instructions for the project.

Chapter 9 - Japan
Do want to learn more about Japan and its culture?
You will have a chance to do that with this CULTURE BOX PROJECT

You will produce a Japanese Culture Box which will include:
  1. * A Map of Japan with a minimum of 5 cities and Islands labeled. The flag should also be included on the Map with an explanation of the Japanese flag.
  2. 5 Geography Cards with information on volcanoes, earthquakes, typhoons and mountains in Japan. All Cards also need to have illustrations.
  3. Make a Scroll with the main beliefs of Shintoism.
  4. Write a Mini Dictionary with 15 Japanese words and the English meanings.
  5. Write a Haiku Poem and include an Interpretation.
  6. * Write a Diary Entry about Life in the Kyoto Court. Include the daily routines of the courtiers, regents, Emperor, soldiers and farmers.
  7. Include a Mini-Book with the definitions of the following words: isolation, Shinto, regent, courtier, shogun, daimyo, samurai, sect, succession, and haiku.
  8. Make a model of a Samurai and label the clothes worn.
  9. Write Instructions of the Japanese Tea ceremony. Include illustrations.
  10. * Write a letter to an American child, explaining what Zen Buddhism is.
  11. * You are a Shogun. Write a Diary entry about the methods you used to unite Japan and how the classes were controlled.
  12. Make a Time Line of the Political Struggle in Feudal Japan. Include Dates and Events.
Instructions:

The Japanese Culture Box needs to be decorated in Japanese style.

'Japan' written in Japanese needs to be written on the box.

There are 4 Compulsory Activities, indicated by * These MUST be completed.

You may choose 6 other Activities to include in the Culture Box.

A TOTAL of 10 Objects need to be placed in the Culture Box.

You will work alone or with a partner.

Each person will have a role to play and information to research.

The Culture Box needs to include name(s), date, class, and a brief description of what you liked best about this project and what you liked least. (Word-processed)

The Culture Box is due April 7th, and will count as a major test grade.

All information can be found in Chapter 9, Across the Centuries, Social Studies textbook. Information may also be obtained on the Internet, but must be put into your own words. 'Copy" and Paste' will not be accepted in any activities. GRADING: Descriptive paper - /20
